Why are scientists so obsessed with studying zombies?

When the zombie apocalypse comes, it will be swift and brutal. Within 100 days of the dead rising to feast on our flesh, only 273 people will remain. Or so suggests a grim estimate from students at the University of Leicester, published recently in the school's Journal of Physics Special Topics.

Okay, zombies aren’t actually going to destroy the human race (probably). But that doesn’t mean we can’t study them.

Evidence shows dogs in Bali are being brutally killed and the meat sold to unsuspecting tourists
Dogs being caught in rabies red zones: AA

"A rabies red zone will mean there has been a recent case of rabies in dogs in that area," Ms White explained.

"Strictly, it's against the law to move dogs from a rabies red zone to other areas of Bali but that's what's happening because of the dog-meat trade."

Rabies can be spread to humans via a dog's saliva. Since 2015 there have been 20 known human deaths in Bali from rabies.

According to the World Health Organisation there are tens of thousands of rabies deaths every year, mostly in Asia and Africa.
